I've recently had a discussion with a friend of mine ,who claimed that vegans surely don't get everything out of their diet that omnivores can get. He was convinced that there is something in meat (and only there), that is good for my body, although he agreed that it may not be essential for surviving. I strongly disagreed, because I was convinced that a vegan diet is just as, if not more, benefial to our health. We both did some research when we got home and he sent me this: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/carnosine
I didn't go vegan because of health reasons, so for me it isn't that important to win this argument. But I was nevertheless surprised that he was apparently right on this one. What do you say? Have you heard of that potential "flaw" in the vegan diet before? Would you agree with him, that we may get all the essential nutrients, but that there are still some things that a vegan diet just can't offer?
I`m looking forward to your responsessmile

Yeah, i think you probably can get everything if you try really hard. But i don't think anyone really does get everything they need, whether they are vegan or not. And Veganism usually isn't done for your health, its done because people are disgusted by the abuse of animals. But most of the omnivores that i know eat crackers, cheese, and meat all day and claim that i don't get enough nutrients because i'm vegetarian. I guess that it doesn't really matter that much as long as you get the essentials and some extra...

hmmmm but that article says "Carnosine is a molecule made up of two amino acids, alanine and histidine. It is synthesized in animal tissues, especially muscle and brain...." so as long as we eat enough plant proteins with those 2 amino acids in sufficient amounts, our own tissues can produce ample carnosine from them!

AFAIK the only 2 nutrients present in animal foods and not present in plant foods are vitamin B12 and vitamin D, so as long as you get enough vit D from being outdoors, and eat a well balanced diet - the only supplement you really ever need to take is B12.

Carnosine is used by many bodybuilders to help with workouts. The way bodybuilders build up carnosine in the body is to take supplements of beta alanine.

Vegans can easily get more carnosine by taking vegan beta alanine supplements, e.g. the one below:

www.nowfoods.com/Beta-Alanine-500g-17-6oz.htm

Many anti-vegans also claim that vegans cannot get carnitine, but there are vegan acetyl-L-carnitine supplements out there, but I don't recommend taking these because the latest scientific research shows that carnitine causes heart disease, which is why mainstream science advocates against eating too much red meat. See below:

http://www.nowfoods.com/Acetyl-L-Carnitine-500-mg-50-Veg-Capsules.htm

If you're concerned about carnosine levels, take beta alanine. Otherwise, for most vegans, a multivitamin and omega 3 algal oil supplement (e.g. from Deva Nutrition) every day will do the job.

Almost every compound and nutrients we get from non vegetarian diet has a vegetarian counterpart and it’s therefore not true to say that we won’t get all the nutrients sticking to either one of the foods. There are a lot of options to try out and find the best dishes to make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs. Paris Tours Now

I think that is totally wrong discussion because vegans get everything they want through vegetable which is acquired from meat. Recently, I read in an essay writing au   service that the future is all about vegans and there are some people who are vegans from their childhood and they are living happily.
