Hi! Great site! I became a veggie a month ago and I started to have dandruffs two weeks ago, it looks like it is due to vegetarian food and meals, do I lack any vitamins? Thanks

It wouldn't hurt you to take a multi vitamin everyday. Welcome to the forum!

I am a moderator in this section too - welcome to the forum.
Like Wren said, a multi vitamin won't hurt.
According to my cookbook a lack of Iodine can cause dry skin and hair - as well as other problems.
[Iodine is in iodized table salt and seaweed.]
Scaly skin can be from a lack of Nicain - part of the B complex.
Dry skin and other problems can also be a lack of Vitamin A.
Dermatitis by a lack of B6.

Thanks again for your advice! I am from the Czech Republic and salt I use (I prefer sea salt) is enriched by Iodine. So it should not be the problem. Anyway, I will continue taking B-komplex as I have been already taking it for a couple of days. And will definitely eat more vegetable containing vitamin A. I want to ask you another two questions.

Firstly, I am twenty years old and for all my life I had been eating meat and a month ago I suddenly stopped and became a veggie as I said. My mom still tells me that it is shock for my organism, it can be dangerous and that I should eat at least fish because of omega-3. It is very hard for me to explain her that it is not true, that I actually help my body and omega-3 can get from walnuts or linseed oil. Is there any way how I could explain her that it is not harmful?

Secondly, how much mg of iron is RDA? In one book I read they say it is 34 mg per day for vegetarian women but in another I found out it is 9mg no matter whether you are "carnivore" or "herbivore".

And I forgot to add to my very first question that I also lose a lot of hair:/

Vitamin A is in (animal sources) milk, butter, egg yolks, cheese, margarine
(plant sources) carrots, apricots, squash, red bell peppers, broccoli, leafy greens, mangos, and sweet potatoes.
I used to be a meat eater too, it can at first be sort of a shock to your system of you go "cold turkey". We are also close in age.
You do not have to eat fish.
Omega 3 is in walnuts and different types of oils.
Tell her you are doing your research and reading a lot of different things that tell you about what you can and cannot eat, and where to find nutrients you need.
I read things all the time.
I do not know about the RDA thing ??
Losing hair?
Hmm... that could be a number of things.
Maybe ask a doctor?
I mean I do not think it is because of your diet, but who knows.

IMO You should see a doctor if you are losing hair. And make sure you are getting vitamin E. :)

I've got that at the moment. It's a sure sigh of a deficiency, mine was an iron one :)

You're best off going to your doctors for a blood test!

(It might be worth pointing out that the doctor is likely to say something about the lack of meat in your diet being the cause of it all, mine did - but I had mine BEFORE I became vegetarian and didn't do anything about it until about 6 months later!)

Hi everyone! My name is Jelena and I am 29yrs old =). And... I am new to vegetarianism =).

It's been 7 months now. It was very easy in the begging and I didn't give it much of a thought, just stopped eating meat.

But, 3 months ago I got these muscle cramps in my leg that doctors can not figure out, and 2 months ago my period drastically changed. Obviously, I am not doing something right... So, now, I am digging online good and trustful materials that would help me be healthy vegetarian. I think I made a life choice and want to stick to it =).

Doctors, just advised me to stop with my new diet style. And I have difficulty finding peers in my community (Serbia) that I could talk to about eating right and taking supplements long term like iron, calcium and B-vitamins...

If you could share with me (beside this forum) some links to web pages, blogs, forums, documentaries, videos, books, research pages, etc., I could get some useful information from, I would be really grateful!

Stay well and thank you! =)
Jelena

I heard that muscle cramps can occur with a lack of sodium in your diet... are you getting enough salt?

Hi everyone. I'm new to vegetarianism like many other users here so I believe we can help each other. It's been a couple of weeks since I refused to continue eating meat, and these weeks were harder than I expected. Not that I can't live without meat, it's just complicated to change the whole diet and my cooking recipes I'm used to.

On the other hand, I tried many great dishes for the first time and found a few brilliant vegetarian restaurants in my area. So I hope it will be going smoother with time.
